Shujaa and Lionesses reached the cup quarterfinals after emerging through their pool matches on Saturday 18 May 2024.

Already assured of a top two finish in Munich, Shujaa defeated Chile to claim top spot in Pool C, the 17-12 result seeing them closing off day with three wins from three outings. They had earlier beaten Japan 28-12 before registering a 33-5 win over Portugal.

This match was tied 12-12 at the close of regulation time, Nygel Amaitsa and Vincent Onyala scoring the tries with Brian Tanga managing a conversion.

With the first kick of the ball in sudden death extra time, Chrisant Ojwang latched on to the aerial ball and raced clear to touch down and set up a date against hosts Germany in the cup quarters at 12.22pm EAT on Sunday 19 May.

Over in Krakow, Poland, the Lionesses headed into their final pool fixture needing victory over Mexico to reach the last eight. They had started with a 21-19 win over hosts Poland before going down 0-22 to Belgium.

They secured the win over Mexico through tries from Judith Okumu (2), Stella Wafula, Freshia Oduor and Maureen Muritu with a conversion apiece from Sinaida Nyachio and Oduor sealed the 29-7 result and a date with Argentina at 12.00pm EAT on Sunday.
