On Wednesday 17th July, Chipu became the first Kenyan National Team to play a Country within the top 15 World Rugby Ranking positions when they faced Japan in the World Rugby U20 Trophy in Brazil. Despite the 34-48 loss, Chipu had turned up the tempo and improved in the areas they seemed to struggle with at the start.
“I was so proud of our boys and the management team. The result on the field is a combination of everything put together. The systems are working, but not consistently. I was pleased the players responded to the change in our attack. Bringing the forwards close to each break down and picking at the base. The defensive system worked and we put pressure on the first and second receiver,” said a very pleased Odera.
He states that their biggest areas of improvement are the scrums, line-outs and the intensity to play for 80 mins.
As the team prepares to meet Canada on Sunday, work needs to be done on the first time tackles and the back line defense off kick offs and set scrums.
The 5th place ranking match on Sunday kicks off at 6:00pm EAT and will be live on the World Rugby YouTube Channel
