Shujaa ran in six tries in their last pool B match against South Africa on day two of the New Zealand sevens to claim a 36-14 victory.
Willy Ambaka was first on the try-scorers list as he went over the whitewash to give Shujaa an early 0-5 lead after an unsuccessful conversion. A loose South Africa pass was intercepted by Injera who set up the young Geoffrey Okwach to go over for his debut try in the World Sevens Series.
Flyhalf Johnstone Olindi split the posts with the extras for a 0-12 score. The mercurial Injera was third to go over the try line extending Shujaa’s lead to 0-19 after a successful conversion.
The Blitzboks got one just before half time as Muller Du Plessis landed a center post try for a 7-19 Half time score.
At the restart of the second half, South Africa lost the ball in the breakdown, Injera quickly pouncing on it and offloading to Jeffrey Oluoch who raced down the 40M to extending Shujaa’s lead to 7-24, the conversion was unsuccessful.
Blitzboks Zain Davids landed their second try with Selvyn Davids’ conversion narrowing the gap to ten points after a clean conversion. However, that would be the last of their points scored as from then on and with a minute left on the clock, Shujaa proved their dominance in this encounter.
Vincent Onyala finding himself on the left-wing raced down the pitch before off-loading to Alvin Otieno. Unable to catch it, Otieno put his football skills into use kicking the ball forward before it bounced in his favor allowing him to ground it. Shujaa leading 29-14. Onyala was last on the try-scorers’ list in the last play as he cut through the defenders’ while deep in South Africa’s half to land the sixth and final try. Daniel Taabu adding the extras.
