First, we would like to extend out heartfelt congratulations to the Harambee Starlets for winning the Regional championship beating Tanzania 2 nil, this with background of tough financial constraint facing the sports federations.
The International 7s global calendar kicks off with the Dubai 7s Tournament on 5th -7th December 2019
It has been a busy 3 months for the Kenya 7s Teams.
- Our ladies team qualified for the Tokyo Olympics during the Africa Women7s Tournament in Tunisia. They resumed training a month ago in preparation for this year’s Dubai 7s tournament.
- The Moran and Shujaa participated in the Tusker Safari 7s in October with the Moran’s running out as eventual winners beating a strong Blitz Bokke side
- Shujaa went ahead and won the Africa 7s Championship early this month to secure a ticket to Tokyo 2020
- A 18 man Squad has been named to represent the Country in the HSBC World Sevens series.
The plan has been to send the Lionesses and Moran’s to the Invitational 7s tournaments (Staring with Dubai) as a preparation for future assignments
Hong Kong – March series qualifiers for the Lionesses
Moran’s have in the past participated in Roma7s, Amsterdam7s, Victoria Falls7s
This being an invitational tournament, the participating Unions, in this case the KRU are responsible of all costs: flights, accommodation, meals and allowances.
This year however, we risk the Lionesses missing out on the Dubai7s due to lack of funds. The cost of preparation is high and the KRU has been struggling to meet the deficit.
On the other hand, we are still in arrears of 2 months with the Shujaa payments.
- KRU has made the required applications as stipulated by the Ministry guideline with various levels of approvals.
- We therefore appeal to the Sports Ministry to fast track and release funding to facilitate timely travel arrangements.
- KRU is in dire straits and there is a real threat that the Lioness might miss on the opportunity should the govt not intercede and release the already approved finances.
Engagement with our stakeholders and Sponsors continues and wish to thank them for continued support.
We wish the Squads and Technical teams all the best in the coming 7s Season. Thank You.
