The Kenya Lionesses(7s) have received their fourth SOYA Awards nomination in the women Sports Team of the year category. The Ladies qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics during the Africa Women7s held in Tunisia in October 2019. This will be the second time the Ladies feature in the international multi-sport event.
In their first(2016) and third(2018) seasons of nomination, the ladies bagged the runners up title while in 2017, they emerged the winners in the said category.
“Receiving this nomination for years in a row is no mean feat and it goes to show that there’s something we are doing right. The team is constantly working hard during training and we have continuously flown the Kenyan flag high during the International assignments,” said the Lionesses Team Manager Camilyne Oyuayo.
The Kenya Cup and Stanbic Bank National Sevens Circuit champions KCB has been shortlisted in the Men’s Sports Team of the year category. In addition to these two trophies, The Bankers also lifted the 2019 Floodies trophy for the third year running.
“It’s a motivating factor seeing as we are working towards lifting our fourth back to back Kenya Cup title and it shows that the team’s hard work is recognized even outside the rugby fraternity. Being nominated against other sports fields means a lot to KCB RC,” said KCB Team Manager, Philip Wamae
Wamae also commended youngster Geoffrey Okwach on his nomination saying that he is one of the next Kenya Rugby legends. “He has a lot of potential and room for growth, from his experience in both local sevens and fifteens, he is coming of age and will be a dominant force in Kenya Rugby,” he concluded.
KCB’s Head Coach Curtis Olago has received his nomination in the Coach of the year category.
Voting officially starts on the 11th of January and the awards are set to be held on the 24th of the same month.
