Kenya Rugby Union in partnership with the Borana Conservancy, Future Health Africa and the Atlas Foundation will head to Lewa for the annual Lewa Conservancy Rugby week running from 13-18th February this year.
Over the past few years, KRU has used tag rugby to empower pupils in Primary Schools across the country. This February, while in Lewa, the Development Department will visit seven schools where they will pass down the rugby values to the children and teachers there. These schools are, Leparua Primary School – (Isiolo County), Ntalibany Primary School-(Isiolo County), Lokisero Primary School-(Laikipia North), Sangaa Primary School-(Laikipia North), Gundua Primary School-(Meru West), Ereri Primary School-(Laikipia Central), Enaikishomi Primary School-(Laikipia).
“Introducing tag rugby to these region increases our chances of having more children interested in the sport and it also breaks down the misconception that rugby can only be played in certain areas. Our aim is to use the rugby core values to empower the communities in this region because there’s alot we can learn from the sport; Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship” said Ronald Okoth, KRU’s Development Coordinator
On Sunday 13th, they will kick off their program with a Get Into Rugby Coaching session which targets teachers and coaches in the region; between 14th and 16th Quality Assurance will be the order of the three days before holding a rugby festival on 17th where all schools will congregate at the Gundua Primary School.
During the Quality Assurance days, Okoth and Patrick Mwika, the Central Region, RDO will meet the Teachers who attended the GIR courses last year and review the progress made. These teachers come from Leparua, Ntalibany, Lokisero, Enaikishomi, Sangaa, Ereri and Gundua Primary Schools.
After the festival, the four partners will wrap up their rugby week with a mentorship session at the Leparua Primary.
