Northern Suburbs stormed into the Dala7s Cup quarterfinals in their do or die Pool match against the Defending Champions Stanbic Mwamba.
The Cubs were leading 12-7 at the breather, a lead they held on to the end shutting Kulabu out of the race on day one. They were the last team to omplete the top eight sides at the Mamboleo Showgrounds after Resolution Impala Saracens, Top Fry Nakuru, Nondescript, Masinde Muliro University, Menengai Cream Homeboyz RFC, Menengai Oilers and KCB.
Menengai Oilers, KCB, Resolution Impala Saracens and Top Fry Nakuru RFC all went unbeaten on day one of the Dala7s finishing top of their Pools and booking quarterfinal dates with the second place finishers.
Pool A
In what seemed like a straight forward pool for the black shirts, Dala 7s served two devastating heartbreaks for Kulabu as they lost 12-19 and 7-12 to Resolution Impala Saracens and Northern Suburbs Cubs. A performance that saw them drop to the Challenge Trophy category while Impala and the Cubs progressed to the Cup quarterfinals stage. Impala topped Pool A after recording 3 out of 3 wins while the Cubs registered 2 out of 3 wins. Hosts Kisumu RFC wrapped up their day one without a single win.
Pool B
From the start, this Pool was the one that had prospects of serving upsets but the Menengai Oilers cruised through to the Cup quarterfinals registering a 100% win rate on the first day. They were joined by the Kakamega based Masinde Muliro University who came in second after beating the Strathmore Leos and Western Bulls and losing to the Oilers. Western Bulls bagged their first Pool match win over the Leos who had a tough first day at the Mamboleo Showgrounds losing all their pool matches to finish fourth.
Pool C
Top Fry Nakuru RFC made their way to their third consecutive Cup quarterfinal appearance as they beat all their opponents Nondies, Kabras Sugar and Mean Machine finishing top of this pool. Kabras Sugar ad Mean Machine dropped to the Challenge Trophy Quarterfinals after the two lost to both Nakuru and Nondies. The Red Lion’s loss to the Wanyore saw them finish second in Pool C while Kabras’ win over Machine meant they finished third.
Pool D
KCB RC and Menengai Cream Homeboyz RFC finished first and second respectively in Pool D. The Bankers bagging all day one wins while the Deejayz single loss was in the hands of KCB meaning they finished second. Their opponents Blakblad RC and Vihiga Granites came in third and fourth after Blad’s 35-0 win over the Granites.
