In Week eight of the Kenya Cup, the two Nakuru Clubs Menengai Oilers and Top Fry Nakuru head to the Capital to face Kenyatta University’s Blakblad and KCB RC respectively. We caught up with Gibson Weru, Oilers Head Coach after their 19 all draw with the Strathmore Leos last weekend at the Nakuru Athletics Club.
“We were very lucky to have drawn against Strathmore this past weekend considering they missed the last kick that would have awarded them the win. My boys played well but the lack of concentration at crucial time costed us a number of points. Though they are a young side, they need to grow and mature fast in this game since we don’t have much time. Being seed 12 in the 2018/2019 season ranking, every other match is going to be very hard.”
On his side’s overall performance so far in the League, here’s what Gibson reckons:
“Having lost five matches, drawn one and won one is quite humbling. When we started we thought we’d have gathered more points by now but the truth of the matter is that we lack experience which is very key in this stage. We shall continue working with the squad we have to make sure we can beat the gap, gain the required experience and remain in Kenya Cup at the end of this season.”
Blakblad are ninth on the log with eleven points while Oilers are 10th with eight.
At the Lion’s Den in Ruaraka, KCB welcome Top Fry Nakuru. The last time Nakuru traveled to Nairobi for this match was in November 2016 when they were handed a 3-33 loss in the same venue.

The Impala Grounds will host the double header; Nondies RC against Mean Machine. Both sides lost their week 7 matches as Kabras handed Nondies a 5-41 loss while Kenya Harlequins humbled Mean Machine when they beat them 47-3 at the UoN Grounds. The second match on this venue will be the ever exciting Ngong Road Derby as hosts Resolution Impala Saracens take on their neighbours: The Kenya Harlequins.
Menengai Cream Homeboyz RFC survived a Nakuru scare last week to clinch their 19-18 win at the Nakuru Athletics Club. They face the Strathmore Leos at the Jamhuri Showgrounds. The sixth fixture and the only one outside of Nairobi sees the Unbeaten Kabras Sugar RFC host Stanbic Mwamba at the Kakamega ASK Showgrounds. Mwamba’s win over the weekend saw them climb up to the fourth position on the Kenya Cup Standings with a total of 22 points.
All matches will kick off at 4:00pm with an exception of Nondies vs Machine which kicks off at 2:00pm.
