Chipu’s Gritty Journey in the 2024 World U20 Trophy: A Tale of Triumph and Tenacity
Kenya’s U20 rugby team – Chipu, concluded their journey at the 2024 World U20 Trophy in 8th place. Their adventure began with a triumphant 28-13 victory over Zimbabwe in Harare, securing their second Rugby Africa U20 Barthes Trophy and earning a coveted spot in the World U20 Trophy that was set to take place in Scotland from the 28th June – 18th July 2024.
Chipu’s entry into the World Rugby U20 Trophy as Africa champions saw them pitted against formidable opponents. Their campaign kicked off with a tough battle against the World U20 2023 runners-up Uruguay, where they fought valiantly but succumbed to a 25-7 defeat. The challenges continued as they faced tournament debutants the Netherlands, enduring a heavy 51-0 loss.
Despite the setbacks, Chipu’s determination shone through in their final pool game against the USA. The team showed significant improvement, but ultimately fell short with a 30-17 loss. Finishing last in their pool, they were set to compete against Hong Kong for the 7th place playoff.
In a dramatic showdown, Chipu drew first blood with Eugene intercepting a pass for a try, followed by Andycole’s assist for a second converted try. However, Hong Kong’s relentless rhythm saw them rally to a 34-14 victory, clinching 7th place and leaving Chipu to finish the tournament in 8th place. Chipu’s journey, marked by tenacity and spirit, has left an indelible mark on the world stage.
