1. It is named in honor of the late Jean-Luc Barthes, former World Rugby Regional Manager for Africa who passed away in 2016.
2. It was previous called the Rugby Africa Div 1 A U20 Championship
3. It is the Africa U20 Championship and features players aged 20 years and below. It was previously restricted to players aged 19 years and below.
4. The winner of the competition qualifies for the Junior World Rugby Trophy, the second tier of global age grade world championships organized by World Rugby
5. It has served as a launchpad for the careers of many of the continent’s stars. Players such as Louis van der Westhuizen (Namibia), Mohamed Omollo (Kenya) to name but a few have all played at this tournament en route to making appearances for their senior national teams.
6. This year’s tournament will be played in Nairobi between the 4th and 7th of April and features four teams namely defending champions Namibia, hosts Kenya, Tunisia and Senegal.
