“Our thought and hearts are with James’ family, friends, team mates and with the KCB rugby community who are all shattered by this news,”said KRU Chief Executive Officer Ronald Bukusi.
James, 22,played at center and alongside elder brother Peter, was part of the KCB squad that lifted this past season’s Kenya Cup and Enterprise Cup double. The Masinga High School almunus made his mark with the Catholic Monks before making the move to KCB in 2014 where he quickly established himself as a first team regular and had indeed been touted as a future Kenya prospect following a series of performances over the past two seasons that saw him win back to back player of the year awards at his club side.
Tributes have continued to pour in from all quarters. The Kenya Volleyball Federation through their President Waithaka Kioni eulogized the fallen center, saying, “Kenya Volleyball Federation and the entire Volleyball family conveys to KRU in general and in particular to the family of the departed James Kilonzo deepest condolences. May the almighty God comfort the bereaved family and grant them the courage and fortitude necessary to see them through this trying period.”
Athletics Kenya President, Lt. Gen (Rtd) Jackson Tuwei wrote, ” May God give the family strength during this trying period.”
“Please convey my deepest sympathy to all concerned,” wrote former South African Rugby Union President, Oregan Hoskins.
Uganda’s Kyadondo Rugby Club posted on their Facebook page, ” We stand with our brother KCB rugby from across the border. Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with the deceased’ family, team mates, friends, the KCB and wider KRU family.”
Members of the rugby fraternity too have paid their tributes on various social media platforms.
