Shujaa kicked off their Olympic Qualifiers day two with a 24-7 win over Uganda in what was the last Pool B match before teams progressed to the semifinal stages.
Alvin Otieno landed the first try for Shujaa off the kick off giving his side an early 5-0 lead after Taabu’s conversion drifted wide. Moments later, it was Taabu who would land the second try after Uganda’s scrappy play in the breakdown failed to secure the ball gifting Taabu with the golden opportunity to pounce on the ball and head for the try line. He swung past his defender before dotting down right under the posts and adding the extras for a 12-0 lead.
Alvin Otieno ensured the Cranes knew just how much Shujaa wanted the win as he bulldozed his way through his defenders to set up a ruck in the opponents five meter line. With Jeffrey Oluoch in support and securing the ruck, Onyala did not waste any time as he picked the ball and landed Shujaa’s third try, Taabu’s conversion bringing the scores to 19-0 at the break.
Come second half, an infringement by Shujaa resulted in the referee penalizing them and Uganda’s Philip Wokorach quickly cutting through the defense to narrow the gap to 19-7 following a conversion by Joseph Aredo. Shujaa would however get the last laugh as Billy Odhiambo fended off his defenders on the left side wing on his way to the try line for a 24-7 full time read.
Shujaa meets Madagascar in the semifinal at 2:22pm EAT while Uganda meets Zimbabwe at 2:00pm to determine which two sides will progress to the final.
