As the Kenya Lionesses prepared to head to South Africa for the Rugby Africa Women’s Cup that doubles up as the Women’s 2021 Rugby World Cup Qualifiers, KRU hosted them for a breakfast at the Mash Park Hotel on Wednesday 7th August 2019.
Robert Burale was the Chief Guest at the event and he shared words of encouragement with the Lionesses reminding them that they are held in high regard. “You are already in the World Cup. That is my foundation today as I speak to you,” said Burale. “Talent is not enough so you need to work as a team. When you know someone is weak in one area, cover that person as a team. Nothing’s greater than an average person with a great support system,” he added.

The Lionesses will kick off their campaign against Madagscar on Friday 9th August at 2:00pm EAT, on Tuesday 13th August they match up against neighbours Uganda Lady Cranes at the same time before wrapping up the tournament on Saturday 17th August at 4:00pm against hosts South Africa.

The KRU Vice Chairman Thomas Opiyo, Directors in Charge of Women’s Rugby Moses Ndale and Peris Mukoko were also in attendance and they also had their individual messages for the team.

Peris Mukoko, a former Lionesses player, acknowledged the players she played with, the likes of Irene Atieno, Celestine Masinde, Millicent Opala and Janet Awino and urged them to make the Country proud. She also commended the new and upcoming players.

The Vice Chairman’s message to the Lionesses was emotive as he reminded them that they are playing for God, for the Country and for themselves.
Director of Women’s Rugby Moses Ndale reminded the Ladies of his undying support towards them in every step of the way. “Each game is a final on its own. When you get into that pitch, make sure you enjoy yourselves and represent the Country well,” he said.
The winner of the tournament will qualify directly for the Women’s Rugby World Cup which will take place in New-Zealand in 2021. The team ranked 2nd will play a play-off match against a selected team from South America. The winner of this match will compete in a 4-team global repechage tournament in 2020.
The Lionesses left this afternoon and are expected back in the Country on the 18th of August.
