The 2024 Sportpesa National Sevens Caravan is in Kakamega for the second leg of the circuit which is being held at the ASK Kakamega Showgrounds.
MMUST Rugby kicked off the Division One Pool A action with a 47-00 win over the Western Bulls in a Kakamega County derby that was followed by hosts Kabras Sugar RFC seeing off Kenyatta University’s Blakblad 31-07. The round one action was mostly per the fans’ expectations as there were no clear upsets.
In the second round of matches, KU’s Blakblad bounced back to their winning ways as they registered 35 points to nothing.
Stallions Rugby caused the upset of the day as they beat the Christie 7s finalists Strathmore 17-12 to register their first and only win in Division One of the Sportpesa National Sevens Circuit. Bankers, KCB settled for a draw with a determined Nakuru RFC in their second pool match while Kabras, Quins, Oilers and Catholic Monks registered wins over their opponents.
In the final round of the day one matches, a misjudgement by the Menengai Oilers cost them the game losing 19-24 to a spirited Catholic Monks side while the Kakamega rivalry pitting hosts Kabras against MMUST saw the Varsity side secure their slot in the cup quarterfinals on day two. Despite Homeboyz’ second pool victory, they missed out on the cup quarters as Catholic Monks and Menengai Oilers had a superior goal difference. Strathmore Leos also dropped to the Challenge Trophy after losing 5-10 to KCB ina do-or-die Pool D encounter.
The Challenger Trophy quarterfinal on Sunday sees Blakblad face Mwamba in the opening match, Stallions match up against Kisumu, Daystar faces Western Bulls while Homeboyz and Strathmore close these quarters. In the cup semifinal, hosts Kabras will play Nondies RFC, KCB will meet the Catholic Monks, Kenya Harlequin plays MMUST while the fans will enjoy the Nakuru City derby as Menengai Oilers face Nakuru RFC.
